Guilty By Association

"Guilty By Association"

That's a term I've used for a while to describe the effect that being associated with people has.

Let me give you an example:

A young kid makes a friendship with another kid who's a gangster. Before long he is dressing in a similar fashion, talking in a similar fashion, thinking similar thoughts and finally acting out the same actions.

It's no wonder that people associate you with the company you keep.

The same can be said with positive influences, and generally this is what I'm referring to when I say "guilty by association".

Here are the steps association usually takes:

  1. You begin to talk like a person
  2. You may dress similar
  3. You begin to think the same thoughts
  4. You start having the same attitudes
  5. You begin to act out similar actions
  6. You share a similar lifestyle

This is the way it seems to go and it's almost impossible to avoid it.

If I still shared the same company I had through my years in high school and shortly after I would probably be in jail or dead. And in fact a few of my former friends ARE currently in jail because of the "choices" they made.

My point is your attitudes and lifestyle are directly influenced by your friends.

I'm not saying to leave your friends behind but simply suggesting that you seek out new relationships that can positively impact your future!

It may NOT always be true is prejudice but would you agree that most people judge you by the company you keep?

People judge you by internal scripts, "I once saw/heard of a person who combed his hair like you do so I expect to have the same experience with you that I had with the person of my memory."  This is why so many sales organizations pressure their reps to go for a completely unremarkable look (in the sense that there is nothing out of place - compared to the clients image of a sales rep).  Cut your hair, wear a tie and so on.  Most of us wanted to fit in with some crowd, at some time, and we pulled our look and mannerisms into sync.  For instance, when I was running a small business in a small midwestern town, I wanted to fit in with the category, so I was the Secretary of the Chamber of Commerce and I joined the Elks club.  Both of these were fun organizations to be part of, but I didn't want to cut my hair some certain way or dress a specific way.  I had the harder path of setting my own category in the organization.  I became artist in residence for those two groups.  This let me off the hook for having to get that haircut, but I was directly excluded from any activities that the members didn't think they needed an artist present.  Sometimes, it seems like my life is one long series of sociological experiments.  Costuming is such a huge part of how you cue people to your category.  Kindly Hit Man, Stripper with a Heart of Gold, Corrupt Policeman, and such are terrific story characters because they are unusual categories.  So if you want to be mistaken for the category of Billionaire, then you have got to start dressing like a Billionaire and if possible try to get through the hazing so you are accepted as a member of the crowd.

The new kinder, gentler, Mass-Control, Internet-expert (KGMCIE) kind of marketer, like us, has a harder path, since all of the really successful ones are entirely, or at least it looks like it to me, entirely themselves first.  Their focus is on finding a blazing need and filling it with an over-kill of kindness.  To start fitting this image, you might have to revisit your advertising.  Is the tone something that an old-style huckster would use, or is it the new KGMCIE style, where real sincerity is so needed and in such short supply.  We can work together as family, because we are all really testing a new low-ego-quotient style.

Final note, People on the internet judge you for your writing style, and your sincerity.  This means making choices based on what you really think will help your people.  In this recommendation age, you have to take on the "Sorting Hat" and show your list the best 3 choices for their needs, rather than just selling stuff that gets a quick return.  If you can show the best and get a good return too, then you can be called a success in this strategy.
